Here are a few excerpts from the highly informative and entertaining An Apple a Day:

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”
This proverb comes from the ancient Romans, who believed the apple had magical powers to cure illness. In fact, apples are filled with Vitamin C, protein, pectin, natural sugars, copper and iron.

Big Mac and super-sized fries.
According to a study in Consumer Reports on Health, to make up for the calories in just one fast food meal comprised of your basic Big Mac and super-sized fries, you would have to fast for one day and eat nary a drop of fat on the second day.

Cabbage and arthritis.
Well, if cabbage can do the trick for an “itis” of the breast, it can also do the trick for an “itis” of the joints…back to the produce department for another head of green cabbage. Peel off two of the large outer leaves and use a rolling pin to bruise the leaves. Warm the leaves in a microwave, steamer or oven. Wrap the leaves around the painful joints for 15 minutes and repeat the process 2-3 times per day.

Dehydration
Q. How can you tell when a camel is dehydrated?
A. The state of dehydration in camels can be determined by the shape of the hollow in their sides behind the ribs.

E. Coli O157:H7—
an update for the summer hamburger lover. Recent studies have revealed that approximately 23-28% of the cattle in the U.S. are colonized with the deadly mutant form of E. Coli known as E. Coli O157: H7. Less than five years ago only one percent of our cows were infected.

America’s favorite nursing speaker/author has done it again!  Barb Bancroft has thrilled her fans with a second book, “An Apple a Day: The ABCs of Diet and Disease”.  This clever book continues the tradition of entertaining while educating begun with Barb Bancroft’s first book, “Medical Minutiae”.  This little gem is jam-packed with research findings, fun facts, and little-known historical highlights.  Conveniently arranged in an alphabetical format, the compilation focuses on diet & health… and even includes healthy recipes at the end of each chapter to help the reader put the information into practice!

Barb’s seminars, always eagerly anticipated by our nursing students and faculty alike, are well known for a plethora of entertaining and informative stories.  Barb has a true gift for making the most complex material understandable… and FUN!  It’s especially nice to have so many of Barb’s nuggets of wisdom now in printed form.  “An Apple a Day” is a great resource for spicing up lectures and for helping my students understand difficult concepts.  Not only that, it’s a really fun read!  This little book is a treasure – thanks, Barb! What a fantastic way of telling people anything and everything about diet and disease.  This book is truly the ABC's of health and nutrition.  It includes everything from alcohol to zucchini.  It provides some helpful facts regarding cholesterol and other health problems.  There are interesting historical facts and some humorous comments throughout the facts.  The book contains interesting quotes from celebrities like Johnny Carson, Humphrey Bogart, and Erma Bombeck.

Ms. Bancroft does a great job in giving the facts about everything and anything that anyone could want to know about dieting, diseases, and foods. She has beautiful illustrations by Ashley Long throughout the book.  At the end of each chapter, she includes a recipe from Ina Pinkney and her Chicago restaurant, Ina's Kitchen.

If you have ever been confused about what certain foods contain nutrient-wise and wanted to know the difference between good cholesterol and bad cholesterol, you should pick up a copy of this informational book that will help provide the answers. Jen Oliver, MyShelf.com
